He's at university and he's about to get married. I'm hoping to finish by the weekend. With an ending that changes everything about the slow zone, the nature of travel between systems, and the ability for anyone to ever achieve what even the Trade Union was able to do, much less the Laconian Empire, the stage is set for the most massive battle yet. With the release of Tiamat’s Wrath earlier this year, only one novel remains in this excellent series. My copy is waiting for me at Indigo. The clear progression of scale in the universe of The Expanse reaches its peak with the reign of the Laconian Empire in Tiamat’s Wrath. His relative absence from this book and subsequent badass re-entry foreshadows a juiced up Amos for next and final book. Further Reading: The Expanse Season 4 Release Date, Cast, and Other News. I started listening to the audiobook yesterday. Tiamat’s Wrath and the previous novel, Persepolis Rising, take place after a many year time jump from book 6, Babylon’s Ashes. Rather than keep the characters young, or invent some technology which keeps them perpetually youthful, the novel embraces their age. Seeing as the title has FULL SPOILERS in the title now, I'm just going to go ahead and say a few things (in spoiler tags as a very last chance for an errant reader): Bobbie's death was a gut-punch. The previous book, Persepolis Rising, jumped ahead a number of years after the disappearance of the Laconian settlers, and introduced the burgeoning empire to the rest of humanity. It was an amazing death and seeing it from Alex's perspective was truly effective and heartbreaking. I also finished the audiobook last week, it was ok for me but some of the Laconia battle stuff seemed awfully convenient. Is this weird to anyone else. And now, with humanity under High Consul Duarte’s galactic dictatorship bent on rapidly expanding its empire, the showdown with greater forces demands wider breadth than simply a uniquely skilled crew on board the Rocinante. Amos's death happened so quick and matter-of-fact that I had a strong suspicion that there would be more to it. It’s easy to side with Bobbie in their strategic disagreement, especially since she and Alex are the only members of the team still together, and their missions, both successful and not, provide a majority of the action sequences in the book. I'm still in the early stages (maybe 100 pages). The novel follows her life as she tries to gain some measure of personal freedom, and eventually take control of her own life after encountering the political prisoner, James Holden. How does that sound? Really good so far. I went back and read the prologue last night (which probably means I am going to be re-reading the whole thing) and it was just so well done. Although some readers may regret the diminished importance of Drummer and the Trade Union here in Book 8 after the Belter’s reluctant but magnificent rise to power in Persepolis Rising, the resistance is still alive and well albeit in the absentee hands of Saba, whom we don’t hear from directly in this installment. Headed there in an hour or so to pick it up. The use of antimatter in the weapons tests against the alien force also ties in nicely with the unexpected windfall that Bobbie and Alex gain during their attempt to capture a high profile Laconian hostage. .cls-2{mix-blend-mode:screen}.cls-3{fill:none;stroke:red;stroke-miterlimit:10;stroke-width:4px}.cls-4{fill:red}. ( Log Out / She has received the best education available, and has a carefully chosen group of classmates whom her father believes can eventually be useful to her rule. We got to know the cultures of Earth, Mars, and the Belt just as something alien was introduced, and as that element changed the social dynamics of the solar system, especially once the rings opened, the path was set. The "library" that he and the other kids have cement his role being central to the endgame, in my opinion. While all the other POV characters have been featured in previous novels, Tiamat’s Wrath introduces Teresa Duarte, daughter of the Laconian emperor Winston Duarte, for the first time. I'm not sure if I'll be able to resist plowing through it unless a book club materializes. The way I see it, I'm the only one here with experience.". The discussion between Holden and Kiki was nuanced and throughout they do a nice job of paying homage to Avaserala, while letting her granddaughter be a bit of a mouthpiece for her in absentia. I couldn't contain myself and read the first three chapters last night. Teresa spends mot of her days simple going through the motions and engrossing herself in various books and movies. Tiamat’s Wrath also brings back a character last seen in book 4, Cibola Burn. Michio Pa, Filip or any of the Free Navy folk, and I was never crazy about Clarissa) but in this one I cared about everyone. It will be really interesting to see how Amos's new state-of … This is one of the better books IMO. Elvi’s chapters focus on her struggle to balance her need for discovery and scientific progress, with her knowledge that science can very easily become unethical. I'm also not done yet (about 300 pages or so) and I'm dying to talk about it, but trying to manage spoilers when people are at different spots is basically impossible. Naomi spends a lot of her time inside a shipping container with narration that merely describes her actions elsewhere, ensuring the political placements of those sympathetic to the resistance. While it will be a sad day when this paragon of science-fiction finally ends, it is certain that the end will be nothing short of satisfying. Ok, cool. It looks like you're new here. If anybody hits a good benchmark somewhere in teh book to stop and do a "haltime" discussion shout out the "events up to chapter 15" or whatever but beyond something like that lets just all bang it out and we can talk about it en masse in totality. Tiamat’s Wrath picks up that story and runs with it. And things are rounding up pretty nicely towards the end, I have no doubt the last book will wrap things up in a satisfying way. Just now finished and it was super fun. Change ), You are commenting using your Facebook account. An additional point of view comes from Elvi Okoye, the exozoologist from Cibola Burn, now conscripted into service as a major in the Laconian military, and her reluctant cooperation with the officers who try to defeat a completely inscrutable enemy gives us a better idea of what the missing time effect we saw in Persepolis Rising is all about and plants the seeds for knowledge that might prove pivotal in the ninth and final book of The Expanse. But even the Storm spends a frustrating but understandable amount of time in hiding. Fill in your details below or click an icon to log in: You are commenting using your WordPress.com account. Finally finished, I also really liked this one. Also got me with Bobbie, but the crew reflecting on it later acknowledging how perfect a death it ... going out as a Valkyrie attacking a battleship on her own and winning - gave me peace with it. Due to her upbringing, she is completely lacking in emotional maturity and personal desire. Through this exposure, she became one of humanity’s leading experts on everything extraterrestrial. Built with and Bootstrap. However, the book also brings in two additional point-of-view characters. In her debut novel, Elvi encountered alien machinery from the race that created the protomolecule, and a metaphysical, reality-transcending bullet left over from the enemy that killed them. Quite a ride. Captain James Holden, the hero readers have followed since the beginning, was captured by this new empire and is now held as a political prisoner in their capital, only treated well due to his personal exposure to the protomolecule and other alien technologies. Tiamat’s Wrath delivers on the promise of its heroes, however, as they all have their time to shine with both the desperate lows that some experience and the greatness that has been thrust upon others. TIAMAT'S WRATH - Book 8 of Expanse (SPOILERS) By Kalibear, March 26, 2019 in ... NG so that epitaph was killer. Leviathan Wakes, the first novel, exposed a solar-system spanning conspiracy involving a private corporation performing reckless experiments on the protomolecule, a mysterious piece of ancient alien technology. The reveal of this protomolecule exacerbated tensions between the governments on Earth, Mars, and the fragmented Belters, or those humans who lived in space stations or asteroids. Damn there's some crazy shit in there.... I’m about 2/3 through. I would love to join! Yea those two points are the big headlines for me as well. They were later joined by former Martian marine Bobbie Draper and Clarissa Mao in later novels. At times, it might seem like they should have known better, but the awe-inspiring nature of the punishment, which takes out one of the unconquerable Magnetar-class ships among other things, allows for hope that the authoritarian regime could meet its end. The stakes are at their highest, which is appropriate for Book 8 of 9, and the scenes with Amos and Holden going through their separate, very different experiences on Laconia, show how much of the inaction in Tiamat’s Wrath is due to most of our favorite characters being trapped in circumstances beyond their control. It is not an exaggeration to say that The Expanse is one of the greatest works of modern science-fiction. Currently listening to the audio book, chapter 14 so far. Look forward to the discussion! His former crew have split up and joined the small resistance against Laconian rule. However, I must fully disclose that I am halfway through and lack any willpower at all to stop myself from being a glutton and finishing the whole thing in the next day. I finished the audio book. The first sentence of Tiamat’s Wrath is a character death. Some have taken me a hundred pages or so get really get into, no such problem with this one. This is the story of my life, I wait for ages for something and then can't stop myself. He co-hosts our Sci Fi Fidelity podcast and voices much of our video content. Having read Strange Dogs, Amos' "death," didn't really impact me the way it otherwise would have. Instead, Naomi Nagata and Bobbie Draper are now brilliantly placed as two sides of a coin; the former as a diplomat and political manipulator, the latter as an opportunistic aggressor with the stolen Laconian destroyer, Gathering Storm. Over the last seven books, Corey has crafted a continuous tale about humanity’s first contact with alien technology, and how that affected the fragile structures of the human race. The kids creep me out. It will be really interesting to see how Amos's new state-of-being affects his character in the last book. She’s sequestered herself away and wants nothing more than to stop the war with as many words as it takes and as little violence as possible. I can already imagine him saying "I already died once Cap. ( Log Out / Also the dedication was kinda high level shade, *Releases an 8th book in a series right on time, "George RR Martin, eh pretty good mentor but WAY better friend.". However, her only friends are her father, his advisors, her dog Muskrat, and Timothy, a social outcast to Laconian society. If Persepolis Rising is the series' TESB, then I guess Tiamat's Wrath is its ROTJ - the new book very successfully takes us from this low point to a very satisfying (to me, anyway) conclusion, but not without some great drama and very emotional losses along the way - let's just say that you can feel George R.R.
