On the Road: Roger Jones Discovering Alsace. Italy, Piedmont. West Midlands The wine is intense, fun and smooth from start to finish. For 25 years the winemaker, Marc Hugel, used the Schoelhammer wine in a blend, and according to his brother, Etienne: “Every year he was frustrated at having to assemble it into the Jubilee bottling because of its significantly higher quality than any of the other plots.”. But the key point here is not how sweet or dry they are, but whether that sweetness is balanced by an accompanying acidity.
A unoaked blend of Pinot Blanc and Auxerrois. Beautifully bright, golden hues with a powerful savoury note backed by floral elegance. Spain, Cava, Brut. His vision proved prescient, and they decided to add the Schoelhammer cuvée to the line.
It’s worth remembering though that, as in Burgundy, the producer’s name is more important than whether the wine is a Grand Cru or not.

We were also aware that we could not double up producers or styles, thus some wines might have equal standing of the chosen 12, but failed to go through not on quality but on the parameters given. Clementine, lime, floral notes and biscuit aromas with an uplifted creamy mouthfeel, full of depth and texture. The inexpensive ones in the list below should be enjoyed today but the best will improve for at least a decade.
