For me this was a definite 5 star rating. Now, I keep hoping after each page I turn that the actual story would start.
I love the unabashed embracing of myth and mystery, the adventurous use of language (like in "The Last Ghost Ship," a six-page story constructed of a single sentence and only one period), and the unflinching examination of the human condition. As a blizzard of warehouses and amusement parlours and slums descends on the small town of Macondo, the inhabitants reel at the accompanying stench of rubbish that makes their home unrecognisable. It is the funeral of the foreign doctor – ‘the most hated man in town.’ Only Colonel Aureliano Buendia, his 30-year-old daughter Isabel, and ‘the child’ who is almost 11 years old, attend the funeral; the rest of the town would rather let the old doctor rot. While this is an early work, not as important as 100 years of Solitude, it is still a wonderful picture of life in a Caribbean backwater, and sets out, without giving the answer, the ethical dilemmas of a grandfather, his daughter and her child, in doing the right thing for a person reviled by society.
