The author chooses to deal more with these battles of the last year of the American Civil War and because there are so many there is not so much room for the characters and their feelings. Of the three books Gods and Generals, The Killer Angels and The Last Full Measure - The Last Full Measure was, for me, the most painful. Each soldier faces death in his own individual way, and yet so much of battle and battlefield deaths are a result of a whole convergence of factors, only a few which may have anything to do with the man himself.
With such a massive supply of subject matter, the author narrowed the scope of the book to focus largely on the plight of "land soldiers" - infantry and mounted forces fighting on land. The result is a rather extraordinary work - and a haunting one - that I would recommend for any (and ideally every) bookshelf. To further organize the daunting ocean of information, Stephenson followed the progression of ways to die in a roughly chronological fashion, from ancient clubs, spears, and arrows to modern drone air-strikes. This is a more than satisfying conclusion to the Shaara family Civil War Trilogy that chronologically begins with Jeff's "Gods and Generals", and continued with his late father Michael's masterful account of Gettysburg in the "Killer Angels". Jeff Shaara completes the Civil War three-book sandwich he and his father wrote, wrapping up the tales from the bloodiest war in which the United States had been involved up to that point. Although there are moments where the writing falls short of the monumental rhetorical challenge with which it is tasked, and while the book manages to focus almost exclusively on "Western" warfare, Stephenson takes great pains to draw parallels amongst modes of combat throughout the centuries, revealing in sweeping strokes, a number of compelling observations about our humanity.

There are, of course, some of the good elements of the other two books, the descriptions of the battles are good enough and there is a lot of effort from the author to show the human side of the protagonists, but it also has several weaknesses. It is this part of the book that will probably persuade me to keep it on my shelf and possibly read it again. And I am only referring to the parts that we don't already know as facts from other memoirs and letters.
The civil war was an awful time period. Focuses mainly on wars the US was involved in, with a couple chapters on Greeks/Romans and medieval Europe and Japan. Excellent writing and an excellent trilogy. It helps a lot that he is an excellent writer with a very expressive style. I wanted to read it, the theme of the book grabbed me in a meaningful way and I just hoped that I felt the same way after I was done with it.
Welcome back. This book reads to me almost like a mix between Gwynne Dyer's, This book started out promising, but ultimately left me disappointed. The last third or so of the book was a detailed account of the last weeks and days of the Army of the Potomac (Grant) vs. the Army of Virginia (Robert E. Lee).

And yet there is a quiet dignity to The Last Full Measure, one that manages to be neither clinical nor Rambo-esque, but rather, fundamentally compassionate. And, indeed, this book is a sobering one as it forces the reader (especially the reader who has never been a soldier) to consider the armaments, motives, and deaths of those who fight. $28.00. I couldn't stand to read one more story of the awfulness of enduring warfare, whether modern or ancient.
Well I have and I do, in fact more than I expected. Historians Interested in the Evolution of War, Too much history, not enough cultural analysis. It breaks down that history into ancient, medieval, colonial, the US Civil War, the World Wars seperately, and finally the morphing and uncertain nature of insurgent fighting we see today.
480. Clued up with an Appendix on military medical treatment through the ages that is almost more horrific than the 300 pages of death that came before.
480. The third and last book of this trilogy and the one I liked less. He tries to describe the feelings of the characters when he couldn't possibly know what was going in their minds. In this brilliantly researched, deeply humane work of history, Michael Stephenson traces the paths that have led soldiers to their graves over the centuries, revealing a wealth of insight about the nature of combat, the differences among cultures, and the unchanging qualities of humanity itself. He illustrates the progress of both sides by personalising the story, using characters on both sides of the fighting to bring a more complete and in-depth analysis and presentation of the facts. I appreciate that he was trying to create a picture for us of what it would have been like, but much of it was unbelievable.
