Shifting continents isn’t enough to keep Midge off stage, and the lead’s comic pursuits see more screen time with better use of it in Season 2. Spoilers ahead. Part of the elaborate fantasy of the Maisel universe is the titular character’s socioeconomic position and ability to utterly neglect typical responsibilities in favor of her own pursuits. Midge’s parents are neurotic (her father is one perceived family tragedy away from dying out of pure spite), while Joel’s parents exemplify every possible stereotype of greedy Jews in business. The first season ended with Midge giving a triumphant, confessional standup set at a downtown club. The Paris excursion is lengthy, but critical to developing Rose and her husband, Abe (Tony Shaloub).

Replicating an enriching origin story isn’t easy, nor is matching the addictive mile-a-minute pace set by the mouths of so many sublime ’50s-era Manhattanites. Midge’s behind-the-mic comedy can still feel like a continuation of what happens in real life — when you’re writing jokes for every bit of dialogue, there’s not much room to elevate what’s written for her five-minute sets — but Sherman-Palladino finds regular ways to help her stand-up stand out.
Her children are afterthoughts, her marriage (while ruptured) still involves her ex-husband wholeheartedly supporting her brilliance, and her wealth is limitless.
But even as she fights to get placed in the prestigious, male-dominated Midtown comedy clubs, you get the sense that this is still half a hobby for her; she seems more concerned about getting back on the makeup counter at her department-store day job. She tells him that she’s going to be alone for the rest of her life because of the path she’s chosen, and wants to spend one last evening in the arms of someone who really loves her. Midge’s explanation: “The city shuts down in the summer!”, Rachel Brosnahan in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”. I have been struggling to write about the second season of Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel because my opinions are continually shifting, contradicting each other and leaving me confused about my own impressions of the direction the show is taking. In other words, it introduces a new act without suffering any dip between sets. I am hopeful that the next season will keep the focus on Midge and Susie’s relationship and drop pretenses about the importance of the men that orbit them. “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” with Rachel Brosnahan, returns Wednesday for its second season on Amazon. (As is parenthood; single mom Midge benefits from a wealth of convenient child care.) This ending left me feeling utterly cold, and baffled.

The Weissman apartment is on the Upper West Side (paid for by Columbia) and as an UWS Jew myself whose family secularized earlier than the time that Mrs. Maisel takes place the show resonates with me SO strongly, I feel like I'm at home while I'm watching and I love it for that. Scene by scene, the new season is a stunner. Orlovsky-Schnitzler, Justine. Many of Susie’s arcs are treated with whimsy for very real concerns. There was a part of me that expected Midge to be thrown out of her parents’ house at some point this season, having to figure out her own finances, her own living situation, and perhaps her own cultural and religious relationship to Judaism.

As pretty as it all is, I think I was ready for a little more depth and development than I ended up getting, and too many loose ends and baffling twists for me. Susie reminds Miriam she needs these gigs to keep paying her bills, but that’s a lesser priority than maintaining her win streak in the club’s swimsuit competition. Bu wait, there’s more: Charming and character-focused, the first five episodes of the new season expand beyond the eponymous Mrs. Maisel, looking at more women ready to push back against the patriarchy. The series’s personal conflicts are well-grounded, but the details — the upscale Jewish New York milieu, the fashions, the repartee — are idealized. Even as I laughed to the point of tears at the Yom Kippur-centric episode this season, I couldn’t shake my lingering discomfort.
And I spread the word—within weeks, my parents, my partner’s parents, and most of my friend group had indulged, and we lamented having to wait another year to see where Midge had ended up after her successful closing set at the Gaslight Café in season one. I am stunned that I could not even finish the first 2 episodes of this new Season.

I am skeptical of Maisel’s ability to redeem the stacked Jewish stereotyping that has permeated this past season, as the characters are well-established at this point. Circumstance is as important to the consumption of media as frame of mind while watching (or reading, or listening). Alex Borstein owns the screen as Midge’s wrecking-ball manager, Susie; Shalhoub finds both comedy and depth in the scatterbrained academic Abe. I am right with you on my feelings here. “Mrs. Never much one for binging television, I finished the entire first season in a week. If Maisel is going to serve as many people’s introductions to Jewish life in New York City in the mid-century, it’s hardly representative of the typical experience.
