I loved this book SO MUCH as a child, in particular the bit where they have to bail out the bedroom, and I was quite surprised, reading it back, at how absolutely AWFUL the children are, oh my goodness. The Wouldbegoods, a sequel to The Treasure Seekers, reacquaints us with the six Bastable children: Dora, Oswald, Dicky, Alice, Noël, and H.O. Welcome back.

Unfortunately, I took so long to listen to this audio book, that some of the stories were a bit lost on me, and since I've never read book #1 of the Bastable children, I couldn't keep all of the characters straight in this book with my lengthy, distracted method of "reading" it. . . . I enjoyed this story very much, even better than The Treasure Seekers. . . . .
4.5 stars & 5/10 hearts. The Wouldbegoods 3. Their name was inspired by the 1901 novel The Wouldbegoods, by children's author E. Nesbit. . . Oh well, I know that this was from a different time and I am not the target demographic but I have thought about this book a lot! This work is in the public domain in the United States because it was published before January 1, 1925. . . But still such fun, I miss my childhood and wish I was able to get into such scrapes. The Edwardian-era children in all of Edith Nesbit's stories live life with zest. . Brilliant. . On the plus side, they demonstrate suitable contrition for all the awful things, but, crikey, it's a bit relentless for something I remembered taking so much joy in.
